EU Eguus 2009 -
"The Future Horse Industry in Rural Areas and Society"
EU Equus 2009 was held on 29-30 October 2009 in Uppsala, Sweden during the Swedish EU Presidency, concerning the future competitiveness, development and social benefit of the European Horse Industry.
165 delegates from 20 countries attended the conference. The largest horse organisations in Europe will now conduct activities in a network with the aim of developing the sector. It is hoped that the conference will be repeated every third year, hosted by different countries.
The conference was organized by the Federation of Swedish Farmers, the Swedish Horse Council Foundation, the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
The Objectives of EU Equus 2009:
To highlight how the Horse Industry may contribute towards achieving EU priorities such as rural development, economic growth, ecological and environmental protection, health and science- based knowledge
- To share immediate experiences of the economic recession on the Horse Industry, as reflected in e.g. sports and breeding, and discuss possible ways forward including how EU programs and policies may contribute to a sustainable development of the Horse Industry
- To discuss how the Horse Industry can be more proactive in the preparation processes for the EU Rural Development Program commencing in 2014 and for the EU 8th Framework Programs for Research and Technological Development, as well as for the remaining parts of FP7
- Initiate an increased cooperation between the EU countries concerning the global issues of importance for sustainable development and growth
Participants The target groups for this conference were professionals, officials representing organizations of the Horse Industry and the EU Directorates, politicians, the Rural Development Networks, COPA (Committee of Professional Agricultural Organizations), Ministries and scientists.
